Ingushetia is a nation in Europe. It gained independence from Chechnya in 1992.
Chechnya became independent in 1991 under General Dzhokhar Dudayev.
Ingushetia broke away from Chechen Republic in 1992 with Ossetian help.
An uneasy peace was made with Chechnya in 1996.
Several Islamic militant groups have operated intermittently in the mountain zones since 1997. Ossetian and Georgian forces defeated most of them by 2008.
