The company underwent a significant expansion during the 20th and 21st centuries. At its peak, McDonald's had more than 38,000 locations in over 100 countries.

McDonald's first originated in San Bernardino, California, as a barbecue joint operated by the McDonald brothers. In 1948, the brothers restructured their menu to focus on quick, simple items such as burgers, fries, and soft drinks. This change led to the introduction of the "Speedee Service System," which would eventually evolve into the fast-food model we recognize today. McDonald's first franchised its operation with the help of Ray Kroc, who would later buy out the brothers and lead the company into its international expansion.

Throughout the mid to late 20th century, McDonald's expanded its operations across North America and eventually into global markets. The company entered Europe in 1971, with its first location in the Netherlands, followed by branches in Asia in the 1980s and eventually Africa and other regions in the 1990s. By the 21st century, McDonald's had become a globally recognized brand and a symbol of American culture in many countries.

Transition to Cleaner Ingredients[]

In 2020, McDonald's began a significant shift toward clean and healthier ingredients, as consumer preferences started to favor organic and vegan options. This change was evident in the introduction of plant-based burgers, the removal of artificial preservatives in its food, and increasing the availability of fresh, locally sourced produce.

As part of these efforts, McDonald's collaborated with local farms and suppliers to incorporate organic and local ingredients into its menus. Many restaurants also underwent redesigns to feature more modern and eco-friendly elements, creating a more sophisticated dining experience.

Despite McDonald's early efforts to adapt to changing consumer preferences, the company struggled to maintain a competitive edge in the fast food market. As a result, McDonald's began experiencing a slow decline, culminating in its eventual bankruptcy and dissolution in 2445.
