As a result of the collapsing economy in the 2030s and 2040s, Seattle experienced an economic disaster that led to widespread unemployment, drug use and the collapse of infrastructure. The American government did not have money to bail out the city of Seattle and as a result, it was largely abandoned. In 2048 there was a massive forest fire that destroyed 90% of the city. Fire prevention was not possible because FEMA had collapsed in 2042 as a result of lack of funds. The city was eventually rebuilt in 2054 and fire prevention was introduced. The city was eventually bailed out by the European Union and this eventually led Seattle to become an independent country with large support from the European Union and the United Nations.
