The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, abbreviated to USSR or more commonly shortened to the Soviet Union, is a Marxist-Leninist state on the Eurasian continent founded in 1917. It was governed as a Single-Party Communist state until the 1980's, when other political parties were legalized.
