In 2021 on September 28 the island region of Japan known as Okinawa declared independence from Japan. This was a result of the popular independence movement that began in 2019 as a result of the murder of a local journalist by the Japanese mafia. For centuries Okinawa was a distinctive region of Japan with its own language culture and value system. The island chain was forcibly annexed by Japan and the people of Okinawa experienced discrimination especially during World War II when they were killed by the Japanese military for speaking their language. The Japanese government was the first hesitant to follow the island chain to become independent however they feared the chaos that was happening in the United Kingdom and Europe as a result of revolutions and increased nationalism. As a result, the Republic of Okinawa officially became a country on January 28, 2021. The country established two official languages Japanese and the Okinawan language. This was an extremely popular tourist destination in the 2020s and 2030s. However many people immigrated to mainland Japan and North America as a result of the increased storms in the 2040s and 2050s. In the 2340s the island's population increased dramatically and multiple artificial islands were built. By the 24th century, Okinawa was a large island chain made up of real and artificial islands. It was the tourist capital of Asia during the 25th century and became a global power by the 27th century.
